Please read these Terms of Use carefully before using Hillpace. By downloading or using the app, you agree to these terms.

Acceptance of Terms

By accessing or using Hillpace, developed and published by OFO Labs, you agree to be bound by these Terms of Use. If you do not agree, do not use the app.

The App

Hillpace estimates how long a walk will take. You give it a distance, an ascent, a descent and the kind of ground, and it applies five published walking-time rules and, once you have logged enough walks, a pace fitted to you. It runs entirely on your device.

Safety: read this part

An estimate is not a guarantee, and Hillpace is not a substitute for judgement, navigation skill, a map and a compass, or a weather forecast.

Every rule in this app describes an average walker in reasonable conditions. None of them knows about the weather you will meet, the state of the ground on the day, a river running high, a party member who is struggling, a navigational error, or an injury. Real walks run over for all of these reasons and more.

Plan conservatively, tell somebody where you are going and when you expect to be back, carry a head torch, and turn round when the day tells you to. Do not use a time from this app as a reason to continue into darkness or bad weather.

The fitted pace is a description of walks you have already done in the conditions you did them in. It is not a prediction of what you can do on a harder day.

What The Estimates Are

The rules implemented are Naismith's rule, Langmuir's corrections, the Munter method, Scarf's equivalence and Tobler's hiking function. Each is a published method with a known author, implemented as published and checked against worked examples from its source.

They are shown side by side rather than averaged, because they disagree, and averaging a fast rule with a slow one produces a number that matches nobody and cannot be defended. Where they disagree, that disagreement is information.

The fitted pace solves for your flat speed and your climbing rate from the walks you have logged. It requires at least four walks, and it will decline to claim a climbing rate when your logged walks do not vary enough in ascent to support one. That is intentional: a confident number derived from data that cannot support it is worse than no number.

Your Data Stays On Your Device

Your walks and your times stay on your iPhone. We never receive them.

That has a consequence worth understanding: if you delete the app or lose your device, your log is gone, and we cannot recover it for you. We have no copy. Keep iPhone backups enabled if your records matter to you.

Purchases

Hillpace is free to download. All five published rules, and planning any route, are available without paying, with no limit.

Hillpace Pro is an optional one-time purchase. It is not a subscription and does not renew. It unlocks planning with your own fitted pace, the comparison of each logged walk against the rule, and keeping more than twelve walks. Purchases are processed by Apple and are subject to Apple's terms; refunds are handled by Apple, not by us.

Acceptable Use

Use Hillpace for your own planning. Do not attempt to reverse engineer, decompile or redistribute the app, and do not use it in violation of any applicable law.

Disclaimer of Warranties

Hillpace is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose. We do not warrant that the app will be uninterrupted or error free, nor that any estimate will match the time a walk actually takes.

Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, OFO Labs is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, or for any loss, injury or cost arising out of your use of or inability to use Hillpace, including any decision made in reliance on an estimate it produced.

Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited under applicable law.

Changes to These Terms

We may update these terms. The current version is always published on this page with its last updated date. Continued use of the app after a change means you accept the updated terms.

Governing Law

These terms are governed by the laws of Germany, without regard to conflict of law provisions.
