Acceptance of Terms
By accessing or using Rootword, developed and published by OFO Labs, you agree to be bound by these Terms of Use. If you do not agree, do not use the app.
The App
Rootword is a reference for the vocabulary of medicine. It breaks a medical word into its prefix, root and suffix, gives the meaning and the Greek or Latin origin of each part, and explains the combining vowel rules that produce the spelling. It also holds curated terms organised by body system and a list of clinical abbreviations. Everything ships inside the app and it makes no network requests.
Rootword is not medical advice
This is the most important thing in these terms, so it is not buried.
Rootword is a study reference for language. It is not a medical device, it is not a diagnostic tool, and it does not give medical advice. It must not be used to make a clinical decision about any person.
- It knows nothing about any patient, because it never asks. There is no field in the app that takes a person's details.
- It produces no finding, no diagnosis, no assessment and no recommendation about anybody.
- It contains no dosing information and performs no clinical calculation.
- A definition in Rootword tells you what a word means. It does not tell you what to do.
If you have a question about your own health or about someone in your care, ask a qualified clinician.
Accuracy
The word parts, definitions and abbreviations in Rootword are compiled from standard medical terminology teaching and are checked against reference decompositions by the app's own automated tests. Language is nonetheless a living thing: usage varies between institutions and between countries, some terms have more than one accepted breakdown, and a few words have irregular histories that no rule explains. Rootword shows alternative readings where they exist and refuses to guess when nothing in its lexicon accounts for a word, which is deliberate: a confident wrong answer would be worse than none. Treat it as a well made reference rather than as an authority, and check anything that matters against your course material.
Purchases
Rootword is free to download. Rootword Pro is a one-time, non-consumable in-app purchase that unlocks the remaining nine body systems, the clinical abbreviation reference and the drill. There is no subscription and nothing renews. Purchases are processed by Apple and are subject to Apple's terms. Restoring a purchase on a new device is done through the app's Restore button, which asks Apple whether the purchase exists on your Apple Account.
Intellectual property
The app, its lexicon, its definitions, its interface and its name belong to OFO Labs. You may use Rootword for your own study and work. You may not copy, extract, resell or redistribute its contents.
Acceptable use
Do not attempt to reverse engineer the app, extract its data set in bulk, or use it in a way that breaks any applicable law.
Disclaimer of warranties
Rootword is provided as is, without warranty of any kind, express or implied. OFO Labs does not warrant that the app will be uninterrupted or error free, nor that every entry is free of mistakes.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, OFO Labs is not liable for any indirect, incidental or consequential damages arising out of your use of the app, including any decision taken in reliance on it. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
Changes to these terms
These terms may be updated. The current version is always the one published on this page, with its date at the top. Continuing to use the app after a change means you accept the updated terms.
