Most painting apps give you a watercolour brush. Wetpress gives you watercolour. The paint here is not drawn onto the screen, it is worked out sixty times a second by a simulation of water moving over paper: a shallow water solver for the flow, a capillary layer for what the fibres drink, and Kubelka-Munk optics for what your eye sees through a transparent wash. Touch damp paper and the pigment crawls outward along the fibres. Leave a wash to dry and it sets darker at its rim than in its middle, the way a real one does. Drop clean water into a wash that has started to set and you get a backrun, cauliflower edge and all. Twelve pigments carry the Colour Index name stamped on the real tube and behave the way that pigment behaves: Ultramarine PB29 granulates into the tooth of the paper and lifts off cleanly with a wet brush, Phthalo Green PG7 stains and will not come back off, Cadmium Red PR108 covers in one pass while Quinacridone Rose PV19 stays transparent through five. The four papers are not four textures laid over the same paint, they are four sets of physical constants: a rough sheet has a deep tooth that drops heavy pigment into its valleys and breaks a wash into texture, hot press is smooth and heavily sized so paint keeps a hard edge, and a barely sized Japanese gampi drinks on contact so everything softens. Nothing leaves your iPhone. There is no account, no sign in, and no network request of any kind.
