Phonicle teaches young children to read the way reading is taught in school, with systematic synthetic phonics. Letter sounds arrive in a fixed order, starting with s, a, t, p, i and n, and a child only ever reads words made of sounds they already know. The reading itself is a gesture: letters sit apart on a track, the child pushes them together with one finger, and as each letter joins the app says everything joined so far and holds the last sound, sss, saaa, sun. When the letters meet the word is said whole, and a small clay toy of that word drops into the child's own little world. There are twelve units and twenty four short chapters, 147 decodable words, four clay worlds to fill (Farm, Home, Seaside and Town), a read-along sentence at the end of every chapter, and short sound games that introduce each new letter. Words a child let go of or took a long time over come back in the next chapter. Every instruction is spoken, so no reading is needed to use it, and there are no timers and no fail sounds. A grown-ups corner behind an adult check shows each reader's progress and the sounds they pause on.
